Painting Katrina

Impressionist landscape painter Phil Sandusky will recount his adventures documenting en plein air the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. Upon returning to New Orleans after the city’s evacuation for Hurricane Katrina and after having mitigated the severe damage to his own house, Sandusky found a city stripped of much of its infrastructure, allowing him access to paint in locations where nature had struck a furious blow. From his painterly depictions of large sailing yachts at the lakefront heaped into piles to those of houses smashed into each other in the Lower Ninth Ward, Sandusky transcended the obvious misery to capture a higher beauty in this devastation. His chronicles also include a stay in Atlanta during the evacuation from New Orleans where he participated in a fundraiser held by the Reinike Gallery for hurricane victims. http://www.philsandusky.com/ and http://www.philsandusky.com/my-art-books/
