Talk/Demonstration - Mimi Diamond - 11:00 a.m.-12:00 noon)

How to Quickly Develop a Marsh Painting

1. Underpainting Choices

  • Color Base: Start with a warm or cool underpainting to influence the final color palette. For a sunset marsh scene, a warm orange or pink works well, while a cooler blue can set the mood for an overcast day.

  • Texture Foundation: Use a textured underpainting (e.g., a rough brushstroke or palette knife) to add depth and interest to the base layer.

2. Design Options

  • Composition Layout: Plan the placement of key elements like water, grass, and sky. Use the rule of thirds to create a balanced scene.

  • Focal Points: Decide on your focal points—perhaps a distant tree line or a vibrant sunset. This will guide your color choices and brushwork.

3. Techniques with Brushes and Palette Knives

  • Brush Techniques:

    • Use flat brushes for broad strokes when painting marsh grass.

    • A round brush can create fine details, such as the texture of palm leaves.

  • Palette Knife Techniques:

    • Use a palette knife for mixing colors on the canvas, creating a layered effect in the water.

    • Scrape and layer to achieve the look of mud and texture in low tide areas.

What They Will Learn:

  • Influence of Underpaintings: Understand how different underpaintings can dictate your color palette and help develop your scene quickly.

  • Brush Techniques for Vegetation: Learn how various brushes can easily replicate the look of palm leaves and marsh grass.

  • Color Choices for Marsh Areas: Discover the ideal colors for depicting marsh mud and low tide regions, enhancing the realism of your painting.

Join us for this engaging session and elevate your marsh painting skills!

Talk/Demonstration - Lydia Ellis - 1:15-2:45 p.m. (Friday)

Learn how different grounds, warm or cool, create a complimentary result. Lydia will share a couple of examples and will work from a thumbnail sketch for design principles. Learn how to create a value painting to work on top of, and how much this reduces your overall painting time. Each study will be 8x10.

Talk/Demonstration - Lori Keith Robinson -  12:30-1:30 p.m.

Join Lori for an exciting chat on painting dynamic landscapes! Here are some key aspects to  explore:

1.     Underpainting: This technique sets the tone for your piece, allowing you to establish values and mood before applying color. It can create depth and richness in your final work.

2.     Moment and Direction: Capturing the essence of a moment, whether it’s the play of light, movement in the clouds, or the sway of grass, can bring your landscape to life. Focusing on the direction of elements—like the flow of a river or the angle of trees—adds energy to your composition.

3.     Strong Composition Choices: Learning to utilize the rule of thirds, leading lines, and focal points will help you create a more engaging and balanced landscape.

This approach will definitely help you create more impactful and expressive pieces.

Talk/Demonstration - Beth Cullen -  2:00 – 3:00 p.m.   (Pastels)

Using a wet wash technique for an underpainting can really set the stage for a vibrant pastel painting. Here are a few benefits of this approach:

1.     Loose and Fluid: The wet wash allows for more freedom in your initial strokes, encouraging spontaneity and creativity. It can help you capture the essence of your subject without being overly rigid.

2.     Vibrant Colors: Laying down a wash of color can create a rich foundation, allowing subsequent layers of pastels to blend beautifully and pop with intensity.

3.     Depth and Dimension: The wash can help establish values and shapes, providing a guide for building layers and adding depth to your painting.

Participants will appreciate learning different ways to kick off their pastel pieces.

Demonstration - Susan Waters -  5:45-7:00 p.m.

Join us for an inspiring painting demonstration outside the Artist Welcome Reception! Watch as Susan brings her canvas to life, skillfully blending colors and techniques to create a stunning masterpiece. This is a fantastic opportunity to see her creative process in action and gain insights into her artistic vision. Don’t miss this chance to witness the magic of art unfold right before your eyes!  (The Artist Welcome Reception is a ticketed event, however, those wishing to attend Susan’s demo may do so Free of Charge since the demo occurs outside the venue.)

PopUp* Prosecco in the Park & Petite Plein Air Painting Stroll

What is the PopUp*  Prosecco in the Park & Petite Plein Air Painting Gallery Reveal?

Join Olmsted Plein Air and Olmsted Linear Park Alliance for a beautiful vibrant gathering, a celebration of LIFE, ART, and COMMUNITY. It is what Atlanta and each guest make it. We learned at our first Petite Plein Air PopUp in the Park that no other event in Atlanta brings together people to spontaneously celebrate creativity quite like this!

Location!  Truly in the heart of our city, Atlanta’s historic Olmsted Linear Park (Dellwood Meadow) is where we will gather with the goal to celebrate everything the Olmsted Plein Air Invitational has to offer from art, parks, and urban skylines. Park Map

The Art! Petite Plein Air paintings will be revealed to eventgoers in advance of the public and will be available for purchase.  PAINTINGS CREATED ON-SITE DURING THE EVENT BY INVITED ARTISTS WILL BE AUCTIONED OFF!

Parking. Street parking is available on Clifton and South Ponce at Shadyside Park.

Dress Code! All pastel attire is the theme that will pull this Atlanta spring evening gathering together but creativity is the only thing that's mandatory. We'd love to see hats, belts, accessories and more! Let's toast to Art!

The Food! Petite bites of course! Rest assured to be a scrumptious plein air inspired fare to be shared amongst all.

The Wine! It's certainly not an evening for ordinary vino and there will be plenty of bubbly prosecco wine of assorted tastes.  2 drink tickets. Addition drinks will be available for purchase **Please note: This event is 21 and older. Beer for beer lovers as well!

The Music! Dance under the stars with Tuesday Nights Live! An eclectic group playing everyone's favorite folk, rock, and pop hits from the 70s, 80s, 90s and now. Featuring guitars, mandolin, cello, drums and bass.

  * PopUp [adj.] pertaining to or executing a spontaneous or unique event where participants create an unexpected, one-of-a-kind experience.
