I am drawn to landscapes, particularly those with architecture and water in them, and prefer to paint plein air whenever possible.
I often use these plein air painting as a basis for larger studio works.
My watchword in a painting is simplicity.
This includes shapes, values, colors, composition and details, in short, every aspect of a painting.
When starting a painting, my first step , before the first brush stroke, is to identify the essence of what the painting is about, why I am painting it and what it is I want to say about the scene.
This simplification and clarification makes the painting go much easier and greatly increases the chances for success.
When everything works in a painting there is tremendous satisfaction and it is worth all the hard work.
